The Obsession
The narrator, an unnamed individual, insists on his sanity despite recounting a chilling tale of murder. He develops an intense obsession with an old man’s “vulture eye”—a pale, blue eye with a film over it. This eye, he claims, drives him to madness. He loves the old man and bears him no ill will, but the eye fills him with terror. Night after night, for seven nights, he meticulously creeps into the old man’s room, watching him sleep, preparing for the perfect moment to rid himself of the hateful gaze.
The Beating Heart
On the eighth night, the narrator accidentally makes a noise, waking the old man. After a long, tense wait in the darkness, the narrator shines a single ray of light from his lantern onto the “vulture eye.” Overwhelmed by its sight, he springs into action, smothering the old man. He then dismembers the body and cleverly conceals it beneath the floorboards. Just as he finishes, police officers arrive, having been called by a neighbor who heard a scream. Confident in his perfect crime, the narrator invites them in, seating them directly above the hidden body. But as they chat, a persistent, thumping sound begins to grow louder in his ears—the imagined beating of the old man’s heart. Driven to frenzy by the incessant sound, which he believes only he can hear, he confesses his crime, tearing up the floorboards to reveal his gruesome secret.
